Convert a short passage
Open the English to IPA converter and paste the two sentences below into Your English text, with one sentence on each line. Choose Convert to IPA, or press Ctrl + Enter on Windows and Command + Enter on a Mac. Keep Show stress selected for this example.
Words view shows one editable card for each word. The small number on a card tells you that the dictionary offers more than one pronunciation. The initial choice follows dictionary order, so a ready result still needs review. In this example both read cards initially show ɹɛd, even though the second sentence needs a different reading.
The tool accepts up to 10,000 characters at a time. It preserves punctuation and line breaks. If you change the English passage after converting, choose Convert to IPA again; review the new result before exporting it.
Match each word to its meaning
Select the first read card. In Dictionary pronunciations, choose ɹɛd and then Apply pronunciation. Yesterday makes this the past-tense reading, which rhymes with red. Select the second read card and choose ɹid, which rhymes with reed. After will, the sentence uses the base form of the verb.
Leave Apply to the same word throughout this passage unchecked for both edits. That option is useful when every occurrence should have the same pronunciation, but here it would replace the distinction we want to preserve. Each corrected card receives an Edited marker.
Switch to Transcription to read the complete result, then return to Words for further changes. The converter looks up individual words; it does not infer tense, meaning, sentence stress or connected-speech changes. The two read choices demonstrate why a quick contextual check matters.
Resolve unfamiliar words
If a card says Add IPA, the spelling was not found in the dictionary. Use Review words to open an unresolved item, check its pronunciation in a suitable source, and enter it in Your IPA for this word. You can paste symbols or insert them with the buttons below the field. Choose Apply pronunciation to retain the correction.
An unresolved word remains visible inside angle brackets in the continuous transcription and text, PDF and Word exports. It is not silently omitted or given a guessed pronunciation. In the word-list download, its IPA cell remains empty and its Status is Needs review. Review proper names with a source appropriate to the person or place.
For an optional separate check, open another converter tab and enter the invented spelling Zorple followed by 12. The result below keeps the unknown spelling and digits visible. Zorple is a deliberately invented test item, not a word with an established pronunciation. Digits remain literal: write twelve if you want the converter to look up that spoken word.
Turn the result into practice
Return to your reviewed two-sentence passage. Show stress controls whether the primary mark ˈ and secondary mark ˌ appear in the result and exports. With it selected, this dictionary gives yesterday as ˈjɛstɚˌdeɪ and tomorrow as təˈmɑˌɹoʊ. These are dictionary word-stress choices, not a prediction of which word a speaker will emphasize in a sentence.
Choose Test yourself to hide the IPA on resolved word cards. Predict the transcription on paper or in your notes, then select a card to reveal it. Select the same card again to open its pronunciation editor. Reveal all checks the whole passage, and Hide all starts another round. Finish practice returns to normal editing.
This is a self-checking activity rather than an automatically scored pronunciation test. It compares your prediction with the current transcription, including your own edits. Check that transcription first so that you practise the intended forms.
Choose a useful export
For a quick transfer, choose Copy IPA. For a file, open Export. Download text saves i2speak-transcription.txt as UTF-8 text. Open the file in a Unicode-capable text editor and compare the two read forms with the reviewed result above. The example in this article was checked against this actual download.
Download PDF creates a shareable transcription document; Download Word creates an editable .docx file. Both embed an IPA font. These files contain the current IPA passage, including your pronunciation choices, manual edits and selected stress display. They preserve unresolved words in angle brackets, so review those before handing the result to a learner.
Download word list creates i2speak-word-list.tsv with English, IPA and Status columns. It includes one row per word occurrence, so the two read entries remain separate. Open or import it as a tab-separated UTF-8 file in a spreadsheet to build your own study list. This is a useful starting point for flashcards; any further card formatting happens in your chosen study application.
Continue in the IPA keyboard
Choose Edit in keyboard to open the complete transcription in Smart IPA. Every word transfers, including selected variants, manual corrections and unresolved words. You can now add symbols, diacritics or notation that a word dictionary does not supply.
The transfer replaces the keyboard editor’s current contents, and Restore previous text lets you recover its previous text. Conversion corrections remain with the converter’s separate tab session when browser storage is available. Changes you make in the keyboard do not automatically update the converter’s individual word cards.
For coursework or a professional note, keep the source wording, English variety and transcription convention with your exported text. This tool supplies a broad American English dictionary draft. Detailed phonetic transcription of an actual speaker still needs listening and analysis; copying more symbols into the result does not by itself make it more precise.
Make the transcription useful
One occurrence or the whole passage?
Apply a correction to every matching word only when the same pronunciation fits every occurrence. Mixed meanings or grammatical forms, such as the two read examples, need separate choices.
A dictionary draft or a speaker’s production?
Use the converter for a broad word-based starting point. Use recordings, your course convention or another appropriate source when describing an individual accent, connected speech or finer phonetic detail.
A document or a study list?
Choose PDF for sharing, Word for document editing, or text for transferring the IPA itself. Choose the word list when you need the English word, IPA and review status side by side.
Predict both readings before revealing them
Use the two-sentence example. Turn on Test yourself, predict the IPA for each read, then reveal those cards. Explain why applying one pronunciation throughout the passage would lose information.
Compare with the model answer
Yesterday calls for the past-tense form; will is followed by the base form. The spelling is identical, but the vowel differs. Review the two occurrences separately before hiding the answers.
Common questions
Does the converter understand the meaning of a sentence?
No. It looks up individual words and starts with the first listed dictionary pronunciation. Open word cards to choose alternatives or supply your own IPA. Dictionary order is not a recommendation based on the sentence.
Is this British English, American English, or a translation tool?
This edition uses an American English pronunciation dictionary. It does not translate text, and changing the interface language does not change the pronunciation model. Use a relevant pronunciation source and manual editing for another variety.
Why do its symbols differ from another dictionary?
IPA dictionaries can use different conventions. This converter uses ɹ for English r, omits vowel-length marks, and uses an onset rule to place stress marks from dictionary vowel-stress data. Compare the convention as well as the symbols, and follow the standard required for your task.
Does Test yourself record or grade my voice?
No. It hides and reveals the current IPA cards for self-study. It does not record speech, play audio or evaluate how you pronounce a word.
Is my English passage uploaded for conversion?
No. Conversion, editing and exports happen in your browser. The tool downloads the dictionary sections it needs; it does not submit your passage for transcription. Your draft and corrections use this tab’s session storage when available. Download a file if you need a lasting copy.
Does turning off Show stress change the saved IPA?
It removes the primary and secondary stress marks from the displayed transcription and exports. It does not choose another dictionary pronunciation. Turn it back on before copying or exporting if the marks are required.
