What you’ll learn
- Turn a word list or your own tab-separated IPA into a reviewed activity.
- Choose between transcription, matching and flashcards for different kinds of practice.
- Create an answer-key-free handout, a separate key, or a reusable word-list export.
A few symbols, a clearer picture
Bring your own answers
Use a tab between a label and its IPA. A supplied answer takes priority over dictionary autofill.
A focused contrast
Ship and sheep share the consonants and differ in the vowel in this tool’s broad US convention.
Review the model
Teacher illustrates stress, an untied affricate and an r-colored vowel. Check the convention before assigning it.
Separate the key
The worksheet and its answers are separate sections. The answer-key switch controls whether the key is shown and printed.
Start with the lesson goal
A short, deliberate list is easier to review and teach.
Read the explanation
Decide what a learner should practice before choosing the words. A small vowel contrast, a group of consonants or a handful of stress patterns gives the activity a clear purpose. Put one word per line and use a meaningful worksheet title so the printed page still makes sense away from the website.
Dictionary autofill supplies a broad American English starting form. It uses the first listed pronunciation, which is not a prediction of your intended meaning. Review each IPA field. When alternatives are available, the Dictionary choices menu lets you choose a different form.
For specialist vocabulary, another language or a course-specific convention, paste a tab-separated word and IPA pair. Supplied IPA is preserved as your model. The maker formats the material; it does not verify that your manual transcription is linguistically correct.
One word on each line gives three reviewable entries.
The tab separates the visible word from your supplied model.
Match the format to the task
Recognition, recall and study cards ask for different actions.
Read the explanation
Write the IPA prints the English word with a blank line for a transcription. Use it after introducing the symbols and conventions. Match words & IPA prints a numbered word list and a lettered answer bank. This supports recognition; if two models are identical, either matching letter can represent the same answer.
Flashcards let you select a word card to reveal or hide its IPA. Reveal all cards and Hide all cards help you inspect the set or begin another study round. The screen’s revealed state does not leak into the printed fronts: printouts use word fronts, with matching numbered IPA cards in the separate key when selected.
Items per worksheet controls how many completed entries appear. Shuffle the word order changes their sequence. Entries without IPA remain visible in the review list but do not become questions with invented or empty model answers. Add checked IPA to include them.
A blank line asks the learner to produce a transcription.
A lettered bank narrows the task to choosing between visible models.
Review once more before sharing
The preview is your final check of scope, order and answers.
Read the explanation
After creating the worksheet, edits to an IPA field immediately update the preview and answer key. Changing the source word list clears the old preview and asks you to create a new one. This prevents an earlier set of answers from looking like the result of newly edited source text.
Keep Show & print the separate answer key off for a learner handout. Turn it on when you want the key on separate printed pages. Print / Save PDF opens the browser’s print dialog and includes only the worksheet content. Choose Save as PDF there to save a document; check the paper size and preview before saving.
Download TSV creates Word and IPA columns; Download text creates a numbered reviewed list. Both include answers regardless of the answer-key switch. They are useful for reuse, but do not send them as an answer-free assessment. Formula-like spreadsheet cells are protected as text in the TSV export.
The print preview contains the activity without the answer section.
The exported table contains the selected words and reviewed IPA answers.
Make a six-word lesson and separate key
Load the example
Choose Try an example. The tool fills the title A first IPA lesson and the six words shown here, then creates the review list.
Inspect the IPA
Read all six answers. Notice the ɪ / i contrast and the stress marks on teacher and about. Keep those forms for this reproducible example.
Choose an activity
Use Write the IPA for a blank-line handout. Then try Match words & IPA to inspect its answer bank, or Flashcards to reveal and hide individual answers.
Decide whether to include the key
Select Show & print the separate answer key to inspect all six models. Clear it when preparing an answer-free learner handout.
Print or save a reusable list
Choose Print / Save PDF and review the browser preview. Choose Download TSV if you also need the word and IPA columns for another lesson or study application.
Check your understanding
Try each question, then compare your reasoning with the explanation. These exercises stay on this page and do not change your editor text.
Keep a reviewed teaching collection
For classroom reuse, save a TSV copy alongside your worksheet PDF and record the chosen variety and notation. You can paste the TSV rows back into the maker to reuse the checked models; omit the header row. This keeps your editorial choices explicit when you revise the lesson.
For a second language or a specialist topic, supply checked IPA yourself. A dictionary miss should trigger review, not exclusion from the curriculum. The tool accepts labels as well as ordinary English words when you provide the answer.
The page restores a draft within the current tab when storage is available, including reviewed IPA and settings. Reset clears that draft. Keep a downloaded copy for long-term storage; browser session storage is not an archive.
